MENDES, SUSANA (1987–)

Mendes, born in Benguela, at age 23 became Angola’s first female editor of a major weekly newspaper, the Angolense, the leading investigative paper in the nation. The paper covers corruption in the oil industry and injustices in the poorer neighborhoods of Angola. Under her direction, the paper also reports on problems facing women.

In 2008, Mendes joined other feminists for the creation of the Fórum de Mulheres Jornalistas para a Igualdade (Forum of Women Journalists for Gender Equity, FMJIG). FMJIG used its influence to urge passage by the National Assembly of legislation criminalizing domestic violence. Such a bill was introduced in 2010; however, the legislation does not include any penalties, nor has the assembly acted upon it.
